Dr. Chuck

Education

Dr. Charles Mauney (or Dr. Chuck) graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1989 and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1993.

Although he practiced as a general dentist for a few years after graduation, Dr. Chuck soon returned to UNC to complete a residency in pediatric dentistry and pursue a Masters in Public Health, which he finished in 2000.

Meanwhile, his wife Dr. Clifton (whom he met and fell in love with while at UNC Dental School), established this practice. Once his pediatric residency was complete, Dr. Chuck joined her here!

In addition to co-running a successful practice, the Doctors have three children together who are now all grown up.

Life-Long Learner

Dr. Chuck is board-certified and has achieved Diplomate status with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, NC Dental Society and the Durham-Orange Dental Society. Dr. Chuck sometimes teaches in the pediatric dental clinic at UNC as an adjunct faculty member.

Most people who meet Dr. Chuck say he’s the smartest person they know. It sometimes seems like he has encyclopedic knowledge but he is really just a very curious person who loves to learn about how things work.

Personal Life

Born and raised primarily in Charlotte, Dr. Chuck is a big Tar Heel fan. He loves to pull for UNC, especially during football and baseball seasons!

He also enjoys gardening, cooking, woodworking, and restoring vintage radios—several of which can be spotted in his office at Clifton & Mauney! He is a big fan of all types of music and story-telling.

His favorite dessert is Dr. Clifton’s chocolate chess pie.

Dr. Chuck loves being a pediatric dentist because it offers him the chance to “watch the kids grow up and to celebrate their accomplishments.” He enjoys being a part of our dental team because every member “strives to make every child feel special.”
