Damon FAQ

Most people who are thinking of improving their smiles with orthodontic treatment would like their treatment to be fast, comfortable, convenient, and discreet. All these things (and more) are possible with the Damon System of braces we have here at Clifton & Mauney. Through the use of self-ligating or “tie-less” brackets, Damon braces can move teeth faster and more comfortably than standard braces. Since the brackets use what’s called “sliding door” technology to hold the archwire in place, Damon braces never need tightening, which means there are fewer orthodontic appointments to schedule, for treatment that’s very convenient.
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about Damon braces that can help you decide if this is the right treatment for you or your child.

What makes treatment with Damon braces different from treatment with regular braces?

A: Traditional treatment often requires the removal of healthy teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space. This treatment approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer, and can leave a narrower arch and a flat facial profile. Damon takes a clinically-proven treatment approach that comfortably aligns the teeth and enhances facial aesthetics, usually without the need for extractions or expanders.

Q: How long would I have to wear Damon braces?

A: There is no set answer to that question as it all depends upon the severity of your orthodontic problem. Once our Chapel Hill orthodontist has examined your teeth and bite, we’ll let you know how long you can expect to be in treatment. We can tell you that treatment with Damon braces is typically much faster than treatment with conventional braces, plus you’ll have more free time during treatment as there are fewer orthodontic appointments to make.

Q: Since Damon braces work so quickly, are they hard on the teeth or unsafe to wear?

A: Absolutely not. Damon braces are fast because gentle, low-friction, biologically-sensible forces are used to safely move teeth.

Q: Are Damon braces unsightly and bulky?

A: No. Damon braces feature small brackets with smooth rounded surfaces that make treatment both discreet and comfortable.

Q: Can adults be treated with Damon braces?

A: Absolutely! Many of our patients wearing Damon braces are adults who really appreciate how discreet, fast, and comfortable treatment is with these modern braces.

Q: How much does the Damon System cost?

A: We understand that cost is a concern for anyone considering orthodontic treatment. However, we cannot give you a specific answer to that question as the cost of your treatment with Damon braces will depend on several things like the severity of your orthodontic problem, how long your treatment will take, and the type of Damon braces you choose. We can tell you that the cost of Damon braces is similar to the cost of traditional braces. Once our Chapel Hill orthodontist has developed your customized treatment plan, we’ll tell you exactly how much your treatment will cost before you start treatment.

Q: What payment options do you offer?

A: Whether your child needs to see our Chapel Hill pediatric dentist or you want to improve your smile with our orthodontic treatment, we never want finances to stop your family from getting the pediatric dentistry or orthodontic care you need! That’s why we offer many payment options at our practice and will work closely with you to help you choose the right way to pay for the treatment you need.
