Everyone deserves a healthy, beautiful smile that they’re proud to call their own, and at Clifton & Mauney Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our mission is to help our patients achieve one. Achieving a healthy smile is a lifelong process, and it all starts with your child’s first pediatric dental visit.

When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?

In keeping with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we ask parents to schedule their child’s first dental appointment around their first birthday. This may seem early, but it’s important that we start monitoring development early. We likely won’t provide any form of treatment at this appointment – instead, your pediatric dentist will examine your child’s mouth to ensure dental development is progressing as normal. Finally, your dentist will provide tips and techniques for maintaining oral hygiene and healthy dental habits.

Preparing for Your Child’s First Pediatric Dental Appointment

We’re well aware that many kids experience strong anxiety around visiting the dentist – but that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, part of the purpose of this first appointment is to develop a relationship with your child and demonstrate that the dentist’s office is nothing to be afraid of.

In keeping with that point, there are a number of things you can do to help prepare your child for the big day. First of all, remember that kids take cues from their parents about how to respond to certain situations. If you maintain a calm demeanor and act like a visit to the dentist is nothing to worry about, your child will most likely feel the same way! Furthermore, talk with your child and explain what will happen during the appointment.

If your child has a “comfort item” like a favorite toy or blanket, we encourage you to bring it along to the appointment. It’s also a good idea to bring along a few snacks or other items that may help calm your child if they do get a little scared.
