Bonding

Dental bonding is the safest way to cosmetically repair teeth because, unlike other treatments like veneers, it is reversible. It is ideal for fixing chipped teeth, repairing discoloration, or mending gaps. This cosmetic dentistry treatment is entirely safe for children, adolescents, and adults. Tooth bonding, as well as a wide range of pediatric dental and orthodontic treatments, are available at Clifton & Mauney in Chapel Hill.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding treatment is one of the most common procedures in dentistry today.

It is primarily cosmetic and uses the same tooth-colored resin that is used to fill cavities. In the bonding procedure, this can be used to:

  • Fill cracks or conceal chips
  • Cover up tooth discoloration
  • Change the shape of teeth or lengthen them
  • Close up gaps and spaces between teeth

Bonding can be done on children and teens. Some procedures are not recommended until adult teeth are all in place.

Unlike veneers, which are irreversible and must be replaced every 10 to 20 years, bonding can be reversed if desired. That said, bonds will still need to be touched up every so often—usually once every 5 to 10 years.

Tooth bonding is unlikely to involve removing any of the tooth’s natural enamel in order to be applied, which is one reason it is reversible.

What Happens During Dental Bonding?

Once we have discussed what the goals of the bond are, the dentist will:

The whole procedure for one tooth usually lasts about thirty minutes, up to an hour, depending on the complexity.

There is zero recovery or downtime necessary after bonding. All normal activities can resume once the appointment is over.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

For children and teens, tooth bonding is ideal for the above reasons. A more permanent solution is always an option if desired later in life.
