We believe that achieving a great smile should be as easy and convenient as possible – and that’s why we’re proud to offer Invisalign, a removable, virtually invisible alternative to traditional braces.

Adult & Teen Invisalign in Chapel Hill, NC

Invisalign is a new option for orthodontic treatment that offers a convenient, noninvasive option for a new smile. Instead of metal brackets and wires, the Invisalign System uses a series of clear, removable trays called aligners to straighten teeth. These aligners are smooth to the touch, lay flat on the teeth, and are made from a transparent plastic material that makes them also impossible to see when they’re worn. Plus, Invisalign aligners are removable and easy to pop out for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

Benefits of Invisalign

Thanks to its unique design, Invisalign comes with a number of advantages over traditional braces. Here are just a few of the biggest benefits to straightening your smile with Invisalign:

  • Nearly Invisible: The aligners lay flat on the teeth and are made from a thin, transparent material. This means they’re almost impossible to see when worn and won’t show up in pictures.
  • Eat What You Want: While braces require you to avoid hard and crunchy foods, Invisalign is taken out to eat – so it comes with no dietary restrictions whatsoever.
  • Easy Oral Hygiene: Flossing with braces is time-consuming and requires the use of special tools like a floss threader, but with Invisalign, you simply remove your aligners and perform oral hygiene as normal.
  • Improved Comfort: Because the aligners are smooth to the touch, they don’t cause the tiny cuts and scratches in the mouth that braces do.
  • Grinding Protection: Invisalign aligners can also double as a night-guard, providing minor protection against nightly grinding.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign is a convenient treatment with a simple process. We start by bringing you into our Chapel Hill orthodontic office for an initial consultation, where we’ll take detailed measurements and diagnostic records of your mouth to form a diagnosis. We’ll use these diagnostic records to create a fully-realized 3D model of your mouth and bite, then use specialized computer software to design a treatment plan that moves your teeth into optimal positions for your new smile. We’ll break this plan up into a series of 2-week increments, then custom-manufacture your own set of Invisalign aligners based on the plan: anywhere from 18 to 36 pairs. You’ll wear each pair of aligners 20-22 hours per day for about 2 weeks before switching to the next pair in the sequence, and once you finish your last set, you’ll have a beautiful new smile that you can call your own.

How To Clean Your Invisalign Aligners

Just like a retainer, you’ll need to carefully clean your Invisalign aligners throughout treatment to prevent dental decay. To clean your aligners, simply brush them gently with a toothbrush and water each time you remove them, but don’t use toothpaste, as this could damage the aligners. In addition to brushing, we recommend periodically soaking the aligners in a glass of water with a denture cleaning tablet to give them a deeper clean. Cleaning the aligners will keep them fresh and prevent the accumulation of plaque and bacteria, protecting your teeth from cavities and keeping your treatment on track.

Invisalign FAQ

As your trusted choice for a Chapel Hill pediatric dentist and orthodontist, it’s not just our aim at Clifton & Mauney Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry to provide you with efficient dental and orthodontic treatments, such as Invisalign – we want to provide unparalleled patient care just as much. This doesn’t just extend to our office, but your home as well. If you’re undergoing our Chapel Hill Invisalign treatment, we want it to proceed as smoothly as possible, which is why we’re providing you with a list of answers to the most frequently asked questions about Invisalign.

How Often Will I Wear My Aligners?

For our Invisalign treatment to work as intended, you should wear them at least 22 hours every day. You’ll regularly remove them for eating and cleaning your teeth.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

Our Chapel Hill Invisalign treatment will vary depending on the patient and the severity of the misaligned teeth. Typically, the treatment time will be shorter than treatment with braces and will last around 6 to 18 months.

Are There Any Restrictions to What I Can Eat During Treatment?

Unlike braces, there aren’t any restrictions to what you can eat during treatment because you’ll be taking out the aligners before you eat. Just remember to brush your teeth before you put your aligners back in.

Will Wearing the Aligners Affect My Speech?

Like all orthodontic treatments, there will be a short adjustment period where you’ll have to get used to them. The more you speak with the aligners in though, the quicker you’ll adjust to them.

Will the Invisalign Treatment Be Painful?

No – our Chapel Hill Invisalign treatment is completely pain-free! However, there will be some minor pressure and discomfort for about a day or so when wearing a new set of aligners. This isn’t anything to be worried about as it’s just a sign that your teeth are gradually moving toward their intended positions.

Can I Still Chew Gum?

If you’re going to chew gum, we recommend taking the aligners out beforehand since gum can sometimes stick to the aligners.

Can I Smoke with the Aligners In?

We strongly discourage smoking with the aligners in as the smoke can tend to discolor the aligners.

How Do I Keep My Aligners Clean?

To keep them clean, you’ll want to brush them regularly with your toothbrush and toothpaste.

How Often Do I Need to See My Orthodontist During Treatment?

Your regular visits to your Chapel Hill orthodontist will be about every five-to-six weeks. This will ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.

Will I Need Retainers After My Treatment Is Finished?

Like all other orthodontic treatments, you’ll be instructed to wear your retainers at night indefinitely after the treatment is over. This will help maintain the new positions of your teeth and ensure a healthy bite.

Does Invisalign Work for Kids?

While Invisalign is meant for adults, we also offer a treatment that’s geared toward teenagers –Invisalign Teen.
