Tooth Decay

Even though tooth decay is a very common problem affecting children, teens and adults, it is highly preventable. When foods rich in carbohydrates like bread products, candy, cookies and crackers are consumed, they leave deposits on the teeth. These deposits form plaque by bonding with the bacteria that thrive in the mouth. If plaque is not removed from the surface of the teeth, it damages the mineral structure of the teeth by eating away at tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

Sensitive Teeth

People with sensitive teeth find it uncomfortable and even painful to consume hot or cold beverages. Sensitive teeth can be caused by many things including:

In order to find relief from sensitive teeth, your dentist must determine the underlying cause.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal or gum disease is caused when bacteria-containing plaque is not removed by daily brushing and flossing. Having consistently bad breath or a foul taste in the mouth are common signs of periodontal disease. During the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, the gums look red and swollen and often bleed easily when brushing & flossing. As periodontal disease continues to progress to periodontitis, the teeth may loosen to the point where they must be extracted. The good news in all of this is that periodontal disease is highly preventable by simply doing a very good job of brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly.

Bad Breath

Bad breath or halitosis can be prevented by practicing excellent oral hygiene to remove the build up of tiny bits of food, plaque, and bacteria from the mouth. Even avoiding certain foods like garlic or onions can help. Having consistent bad breath can be a sign of gum disease, tooth decay, or another dental problem.

Canker Sores

Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small sores on the inside of the mouth that have a white or gray base surrounded by a red-colored border. A canker sore, which can last for a week or two, can be treated and reduced by using an antimicrobial mouth rinse or a topical agent designed to treat these sores.

Orthodontic Problems

A poor bite or malocclusion can be inherited or acquired. Some of the most common causes of a malocclusion include teeth that are crowded, missing teeth or extra teeth, a misaligned jaw, an injury, or an undesirable oral habit like thumbsucking.
