Celebrating National Orthodontic Health Month

As your trusted pediatric dentistry in Chapel Hill, and the surrounding areas of Hillsborough and Durham, NC, we at Clifton & Mauney strive to provide the best in high quality orthodontic treatments. We also pride ourselves on our open and honest communication to make sure that all of our patients always feel comfortable and have a complete grasp of their orthodontic situation. Since October is National Orthodontic Health Month, it’s only fitting that we take this time to raise awareness of the importance of orthodontics.

The Importance of Orthodontics

Though we all know that orthodontics will lead to a straighter smile, it can lead to a healthier smile as well. Straight teeth are easier to brush, floss, and take care of, making it no surprise that people with straighter teeth generally also have healthier teeth.

In addition, orthodontics can be used to boost one’s confidence. Many people with crooked teeth tend to hide their smiles or keep themselves from laughing around others because they don’t want their teeth to be seen. With orthodontic treatment, a person can feel more comfortable smiling, laughing, and just acting like his or her true self. This can allow someone to achieve more social success – and sometimes even career success as well.

The Month of Orthodontics…and Candy!

Ironically enough, National Orthodontic Health Month also coincides with Halloween, the holiday most known for people gorging themselves with massive amounts of candy. Now, you don’t have to boycott candy while you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment (nor would we even expect someone to do such a thing!), but it’s important for you to use moderation. For the sake of your teeth, try to limit yourself to no more than a few small pieces a day.

Also, if you have braces, you’ll want to pay extra attention to candies that are hard or sticky (or contain ingredients that fit either of those descriptions). These types of food can cause damage to your braces, so that means you’ll have to avoid such candies that include Snickers bars, Hershey’s bars with almonds, Tootsie Rolls, and caramel. Not to worry though! There’s still plenty of delicious treats you can eat this Halloween, including plain Hershey’s bars, Kit Kat bars, and Reese’s cups.
