Fall Sports Safety
The end of summer is here which means it’s back to school for our younger patients. With school starting up again, this also means that it’s time for fall sports to commence. Clifton & Mauney Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry is proud of our student athlete patients and we want to ensure they have a safe season as contact and competitive sports can pose a risk to teeth and braces. In order to play it safe, we recommend that all of our patients wear a mouth-guard during practices and game time to ensure their teeth, mouth and braces stay safe and protected.
Protect Your Smile With A Mouth-Guard This Season
Sports are a great way for adolescents and teens to get exercise, practice good sportsmanship and build teamwork skills. Unfortunately, sports do pose an increased risk of injury to the mouth and head area, which can be risky for someone who is currently undergoing orthodontic treatment. A hard tackle, bad fall or a ball to the face can easily lead to mouth, head or jaw injuries and even potentially broken braces or brackets.
To keep your mouth protected, we recommend getting a mouth-guard from our Chapel Hill orthodontists, Dr. Clifton and Dr. Mauney. Wearing a mouth-guard is by far the best way to protect your teeth during contact sports as it will hold your teeth in place while also absorbing energy from a tackle or fall, keeping your teeth, mouth and any orthodontic appliances safe from damage. If you are an athlete without braces, there are several over the counter mouth-guards you can choose from. If you’re an athlete who is currently wearing braces, we can provide a mouth-guard that will fit perfectly over your orthodontic appliances.
